THE STORY

The CROWN Act — Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair — prohibits race-based hair discrimination based on hair texture and protective hairstyles, including braids, locs, twists, and knots, in workplaces and K–12 schools. First signed into law in California on July 3, 2019, the legislation has since spread to 30 states, Washington D.C., and 50+ municipalities — making July 3rd a nationally recognized day of celebration and advocacy known as National CROWN Day aka Black Hair Independence Day .
